Kids grouped holding spinesChiropractic For Kids

Did you know that chiropractic is great for kids? Kids love coming to our office and getting their spines adjusted. What makes a child's spine need an adjustment? Most children's spines have subtle spinal damage called vertebral subluxations. Subluxations can develop during the birth process (from the stresses to the infant's spine) or at other times such as when a baby starts to raise their head and begins to stand and walk (and fall). Vertebral subluxations which irritate nerves can contribute to many health problems because subluxations can weaken internal organs, lower resistance to disease and even affect eye, ear, nose, throat and brain function. Because childhood is a very physical time - with all the running and jumping, falls and accidents - most children have one or more subluxations. For that reason all children need to have their spines checked. Ask us for information on chiropractic care for children; it could make a big difference in their lives. Also, chiropractic keeps you looking young and flexible. The lifelong chiropractic patients pictured above are in their 70s now!

When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen.
When they're finished, I climb out.

Spine parts & curvesYour Curves

As the illustration below on the left shows, your spine is naturally curved. It has a neck (cervical) curve, a mid back (thoracic curve) and a low back (lumbar curve). When you are a fetus your spine is curved like a C but as your neck curve develops you start to hold your head up and as your low back curve develops you begin to stand. Baby walkers are not recommended because they put unnatural pressure on the baby's low back before the curve naturally develops and they're also dangerous. Also infants using walkers have been seriously hurt by rolling down staircases.

It's a GOOD thing your spine has curves. A straight spine is much weaker than a curved one. Curves give your spine flexibility and strength and it's important to preserve them. What makes your spine curved? Your discs! More on your discs in the next newsletter.

BabyYour Inner Healer

You are alive because an incredible "source" of love, power, happiness and strength supports you. It hovers just above the surface of your awareness. Chiropractors refer to this "source" as your Innate Intelligence though other terms used to describe it are your Inborn Doctor or Inner Wisdom. Your inner wisdom or Innate Intelligence uses your nervous system's "communication lines" (nerves) to send energy and information to run your body. When your spine is out of alignment it can stress your nervous system. This can disturb and unbalance the flow of energy and information that is always percolating through you from your Source. Every time your chiropractor corrects your spinal subluxations, he/she releases stress from your nerves, helping to reconnect your body/mind to your "source" of life and healing.

Don't ever doubt the great healing power that is within you. You can use this power to help and heal yourself and others. Chiropractic is a wonderful way to reconnect you to your Source yet sometimes such reconnection occurs as if by magic. The story below is a wonderful example of this power. It is from Dr. Joseph Chilton Pearce's wonderful book, The Magical Child. (1)

"His eight-year-old son was whittling with a knife, slipped and severed the arteries in his left wrist. Following an instant panic at the sight of the spurting blood, the father, as if in a dream, seized his screaming son's face, looked into his eyes, and commanded, 'son, let's stop that blood.' The screaming stopped, the boy beamed back, said 'okay,' and together they stared at the gushing blood and shouted, 'Blood, you stop that.' And the blood stopped. In a short time, the wound healed…."The child is biologically geared to take reality cues from the parent…All the son needed was the suggestion and the support."

"This is an example of Piaget's reversibility thinking - the ability to consider any possibility within a continuum of possibilities as true, knowing that you can come back to where you start from. That is what the child had been doing in his play for the first seven years."

Words of Wisdom

A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt.

He said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one."

The grandson asked him, "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?"

The grandfather answered, "The one I feed."

Chiropractic and Spinal Research

Did you know there are thousands of papers from different journals on the wonders of chiropractic and spinal care in health and disease? Anyone who has any kind of health problem needs chiropractic care. Is there any condition you'd like to know about? Ask us.

Restoration of female fertility - A 36-year-old woman had been under medically care for infertility for a year to no avail. When she finally sought chiropractic care she also had pelvic pain (often interfering with sleep), low neck and upper back pain, headache of two weeks duration and tinnitis of several year's duration. Chiropractic care was given three times a week for two weeks, twice a week for four weeks and once a week for 3 weeks. The tinnitis and the pelvic, lower neck and upper back pain were improved. Headaches became mild and rare. Patient become pregnant shortly thereafter and had an uncomplicated delivery. (2)
Chiropractic for pregnancy and labor - In this review of case studies it was revealed that one half of all pregnant women complain to their obstetricians about backache. Chiropractic care has been shown to significantly reduce such pain and reduce labor time. (3)
Disc herniation resolving without surgery after chiropractic care - This is a study of twenty-one patients whose CT scans diagnosed lumbar disc herniation. They began chiropractic care and in all cases their nerve root pain resolved after spinal adjustments. A follow-up CT scan at 6 months later showed the herniation reduced or disappeared in most patients. (4)

That's it for now. Let me know what you think of this newsletter. Feel free to pass this on to friends or relatives, especially those who are walking medicine cabinets. Come in for a spinal checkup yourself. Remembers, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

Give 'em health.
